I'm upgrading my PC and have about 500$ to spend right now.
I was thinking of getting:

ASUS M2R32-MVP Socket AM2 AMD 580X CrossFire ATX AMD Motherboard
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Micron D7 Chip Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Windsor 2.8GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor

Can you guys suggest anything better for the same price or maybe different manufacturers? nVidia/ati, AMD/Intel? I haven't kept up with everything lately and don't know whats the current best for gaming.

Go for Intel motherboard and core 2 duo.. much better and cheaper.. also get the 800 mhz memory rather than 1066 cuz there seems to be not much of a difference and the 800 mhz is like $90 cheaper. Hope this helps
Mind linking me a good mobo and cpu?

Looking at the tomshardware charts the AMD looks to out perform the Intel, could anyone else give some input on which to choose please.

those chart were posed before the new Intel processors came out they will blow away any AMD right now.
