USB drives stops working

Greetings!!
I have a smart board connected to my back usb port on the computer. Whenever the monitor goes to sleep mode the usb devices/port stops working. When I bring the screen back to alive the usb is still not working. Every time the monitor comes back I have to unplug the usb and plug it back in to get the connection back up and running. Why would it stop working when the monitor goes to sleep and is there a way to keep the usb from not shutting off when the monitor goes to sleep.

disable monitor power controls and just use a screen saver.

Why it behaves this way -- Poor design. The power control is affecting more
than JUST the monitor

I guess that is the only solution to it... Cant that burn the LCD screen faster because its always on..
