Video card/VGA Mode/Monitor Problem

To be open I am not very computer savy.
I am running XP MCE and I am having issues getting anything to show up on my monitor. If I boot in VGA mode it shows up but as soon as I change any of the settings I loose the image again. When I checked the monitor settings the computer no longer recognises my monitor (I am using an LCD flat screen TV/monitor)it just says default monitor. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what the problem could be and any possible solutions.

I'm guessing you're changing to resolutions / refresh rates that your monitor doesn't support. Which video card / onboard video and Monitor do you have? How do you connect the two? VGA, DVI, Component Video...?

what resolutino that you are trying to set to? try to make the refresh rate like 60 and increase the resolution according to what the maximum (or the second max) that the LCD supports.
