I have been battling malware/trojan infections on my HP laptop for a whole week now. Every time I think I've got it nailed, the offenders return. the winXXX.tmp.exe programs keep trying to access the internet (thank hell I have zonealarm running now), and I keep getting cool.exe in my process list. Ack! I've gone through the steps suggested before posting my HJT! log, including all the fixes and anti-malware progs run in safe mode.

I not clean yet. Here's my HJT log. Please help!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

You`ve obviously got rid of the cool.exe trojan. However, there is one nasty entry in your HJT log we need to get rid of.

Download the Pocket Killbox programme from HERE. Extract it, but don`t run it yet.

You might want to copy and paste these instructions into a notepad file. Then you can have the file open in safe mode, so you can follow the instructions easier.

Boot into safe mode, under your normal user name(NOT THE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT). See how here.> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html

Turn off system restore.(XP/ME only) See how here.> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial56.html

In Windows Explorer, turn on "Show all files and folders, including hidden and system". See how here.> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial62.html

Run HJT with no other programmes open(except notepad). Click the scan button. Have HJT fix the following, by placing a tick in the little box next to(if there).

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winepi32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winepi32.dll

Click on the fix checked button.

Close HJT.

Run the killbox.exe file. When it loads type the full path to the file you would like to delete in the field and check the delete file on reboot button. press the Delete File button (looks like a red circle with a white X). It will prompt you to reboot, select no until you have finished inputting the files you want to delete, only then allow it to reboot and hopefully your files will now be deleted.

This is the filepath you need to enter into killbox.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winepi32.dll

Once your system has rebooted, turn system Restore back on.

Post a fresh HJT log and let me know how your system is running.

Regards Howard

Moving on...

First of all, thanks very much for responding. Your help is greatly appreciated. I followed the instructions in your reply, and since booting up normally I haven't seen any winxxx.tmp.exe messages from ZoneAlarm and I don't see cool.exe in my process list. I've posted my new HJT log, the only thing I notice is that the winepi32.dll entry is still there but it says file missing.

In general, computer seems to be running fine though. Think I'm good yet?

Have HJT fix these two entries.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winepi32 - winepi32.dll (file missing)<This entry is now inactive, hence the file missing notice.

Other than the above, your HJT log is clean.

If you have any further virus/spyware problems, please post in this thread.

Regards Howard :)
