i get this message popping up constantly on windows- it appears on the windows security badge with red, green, yellow and blue on an icon on the bottom right.

the message reads:
WARNING! Your computer is infected
Windows has detected spyware infection! Click this message to install the latest update of Windows security software.. (the two full stops at the end are intentional- no idea what they are for!)

if i click the icon, it directs me into IE even though i use firefox and another message pops up:

NOTICE! If your computer has been running slower than normal, it may be infected with viruses, adware or spyware.
WinAntiVirus PRO can perform a quick and completely FREE scan of your system for malicious programs.

the OK button leads to this link:
http://www.amaena.com/securityworm8...48&affid=pp_3002226703&ax=1&p=3&ex=1&h=10&j=0
which gets redirected i think

and the Cancel button gets redirected to a slightly different page
http://www.amaena.com/securityworm6...948&affid=pp_3220826705&ax=1&p=&ex=1&h=10&j=0

(not sure whether this will be the same for you)

every time i click the link to download, my other virus programs (avast and i think the other one is winferno) tell me it is infected, so i havent downloaded anything yet.

sorry if similar problems have been tackled, but im new on the board so i wouldnt know about them!!
thanks in advance

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Very Important: Before deciding whether you should clean or reformat your system, go and read this thread HERE and decide what it is you want to do.

If after reading the above, you wish to clean your system, do the following.

Go and read the Viruses/Spyware/Malware, preliminary removal instructions. Follow all the instructions exactly.

Post fresh HJT, AVG Antispyware and Combofix logs as attachments into this thread, only after doing the above.

Also, let me know the results of the AVG Antirootkit scan.

I think you have already answered your question, or should i say your antivirus software has. These pop-ups are there to lure you into thinking that you have a virus etc on your pc; by panicking the owner you promptly try to download the software they say will fix your pc and by doing so literally download a virus.

So ignore these pop-ups (hit the X instead of cancel) because if you have adequate antivirus already installed, which you have; your pc would automatically tell you anyway if you had a virus.

Edit/Delete Message

The last thing PennilessLlama should do is ignore the popups. Sure, he definitely shouldn`t click on them, but the fact he`s getting them in the first place means his system is probably already infected with some sort of malware etc.

Antivirus programmes will catch and kill a lot of infections, but unfortunately not all of them by any means. I see lots of infected computer systems that have every security application under the sun running on them and still they manage to get infected with various nasties. Some infections require specialist tools/techniques in order to get rid of them.

Follow the instructions I gave you in my first post and post the requested logfiles. I`ll then see what needs to be done.

It`s completely upto you, but unless you post the requested log files, I can`t say one way or the other, whether your system is clean or not. Just because the symptoms have disappeared, doesn`t necessarily mean your system is clean.
