I am not familiar with surround sound cards, but have been wondering whether it is possible to play different wav files out of each of the channels of a surround sound card?

I have written a small program that allows me to 'merge' 2 mono wav files into a 'stereo' wav file, and play them at the same time - wav1 to left, wav2 to right. What I am hoping to do is extend this to at least 4 wav files, each one coming out of left front, left rear, right front, right rear. Is this possible? If so, where can I get more info on this? I havnt been able to find anything so far on the net.

Thanks for any advice

Most audio file formats are stereo only - you can't possibly put more than two channels in there. AFAIK the only free codec for surround sound is Vorbis.

Can't help you with any specific program to actually create surround Vorbis files.
