How much do you want to spend? What kind of games do you play? What brand/model of power supply unit do you have? How much room do you have in the PC case?

It really depends on what games you want to play, and power you have. But if you are just looking for a suggestion, 5700 XT

I can understand why you are looking to upgrade from GTX970; I basically did the same to enjoy better quality gaming. My suggestion would be to go with either RTX 2060 or RX 5700. If you think you will need more power from your GPU, you could even go for GTX 1660 Ti, which is around 40% faster than the GTX 970.

Hope this helps!

Take the above answers and gather your info because there is a wide range of suggestions based on your needs and what is available.

But let me take the info at hand and see what we can at least start with.

You have a 970 so it can be safely assumed your game preferences are above The Sims.
Also, the 970 peaks at 150-watt power consumption so try to keep power draw around there.

An AMD example would be a 5600XT (150 watts)

An Nvidia example the RTX 2060 (Couldn't find any good videos) 155 watts

I had a gtx970--->gtx1070---->5700XT (now)

The difference between the 970 and the 5700XT is like night and day.

If you are only gaming at 1080p@60hz, it's more than is needed. Way more. It would last you into a monitor upgrade.
