which OS to use?

i have xp pro right now but it hogs too mcuh RAM.. just curious which OS to use (or should i stay with xp pro?)

also i heard that P4 HT is only supported by XP PRO. is this tru??

how do i know if my HT is actually being used?

It's not XP Pro that's hogging, most likely you have bloatware on your PC, like Symantec/Norton, McAfee, and/or AOL.
XP Pro runs best with 512MB memory or more.

It also has a test-util for HT.

would u consider BitDefender as bloatware? its the AV i use...

i only have 18 System Processes running (of the 35 total) n this is my normal load n free mem: 244mb

From the 512mb you have, that is plenty free. Don't forget you have virtual memory as well.
Bitdefender is not considered bloatware (but it is also not considered to be all that good either).
Maybe you should get CrapCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/ to rid you of junk.
Then do a full chkdsk /f and a defrag.
