Will my MOBO support a new processor and differnet RAM?

  1. Hi,

I think that my MOBO can support this processor, but I just wanted to check.

    I currently have a Intel Core 2 Duo E660 2.4GHz, with 2GB DDR2 533MHz RAM (2x1GB).
My MOBO is an ASUS P5N-E SLI.

I want to upgrade to an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 2.66GHz Quad Core CPU. According to the ASUS website, my computer can support Quad core.

    - Support Intel® next generation 45nm Multi-core CPU
    - Intel® Quad-Core

I also wondered how much is the maximum RAM my MOBO can support (can I put in 2GB sticks in or just 4x1GB).

    - Dual-channel DDR2 800/667/533

All help greatly appriciated in question #1 or #2.

I have 2 sticks of RAM (2x1GB), which is 2GB.

I need more to match with the processor - I do video editing, high end app. and advanced graphic interlace, so it helps when programs take less time to load.
(if you use things like photoshop, you know what I mean about loading).

Also, it will help with opening files (5GB) on my HDD, instead of getting 2 in RAID.

I just wondered if my MOBO supports 2GB sticks, meaning 8GB in 4 slots.

Windows XP can theoretically support up to 4gb, in reality, it doesn't support more than 3gb.

So get 2 sticks of 2gb for what you do.

Your mobo will support up to 8gb of ram. That can only be done with four 2gig sticks (and a 64bit OS.) There are no 2gig memory sticks in the QVL. That mobo will even support 45nm Yorkfield quadcores that will be out this December.
