I am trying to reinstall Win XP on my computer after having a few problems, but I acidentally rebooted it as it started the installation. Now when I try to boot it up it says "Restarting Intalation....................." It then starts up the graphical installer and the mouse shows up on a black screen, then it just shut off completly and the process starts over. Does anyone have any idea how to cancel the install so I can just boot Windows again? I cant just wipe the disk because my backups don't cover some recent data that is worth quite a bit to me.

Sounds like it could be anything from a damaged MBR to the NTLDR.
Can you boot into safe mode and load last known good config?
Have you tried loading the repair console and see if you can fix it from there?
Here's a link to fixing WinXp common problems.

Cheers.

I'm pretty sure its not the MBR and I can still get into the recovery console and find my files, i'm just at a loss how to remove the installer that it has written over my boot files so I can boot into windows

Ok, I installed windows XP on a different partition so i can get at the first install, now I just need to know what files to replace so I can boot.
