Windows Explorer Won't Start!

Hi I'm new here. I just registered because of this problem. I've read a couple posts with the same problem but they never seem to actually get resolved.

Every time I start my computer, everything works fine until I log on. Once I'm there all I see is my desktop wallpaper and the mouse, no icons or start menu. If I get to task manager and manually run explorer the start menu flashes for a second and then leaves again. I tried the repair operation by booting from the windows XP and nothing changed. I was on the phone with the microsoft tech support for hours and still got nothing resolved. I think it's probably some virus or something but I can't do anything about it from this state. I have important data on the computer I would rather not lose.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Yeah I think so. The Windows XP Home Edition. I tried booting from it and running the repair twice but still nothing.

Sorry I'm so late in replying!

Can you get to the run command on the start menu? If so type sfc /scannow. You will need the windows cd in for this.
If your problem is caused by hard drive corruption then that may fix it.
