Windows program problems please help

Hi i recently devloped a problem with my windows xp system, it occured shortly after my antivirus program (norton antivirus 2005 security suite) finished updating itself, a red box appeared saying a virus was found then ever since then norton doesnt work, ive tried to reinstall it to no avail, everytime i click on ANY program it pops up saying chose what you would like to open this program with, i have tried to do a system restore but this pops up no matter what i click on! please help before i kill myself :knock:
my system is: windows xp service pack 2, amd athlon 2000xp+ processor, 512mb ddr ram, mx440 64mb graphics, 80 gb maxtor hd

I don`t know if you meant that you suceeded in reinstalling Norton,or just tried.Either way,here`s a
removal tool for all Norton products - Norton crap removal

Here`s Techspot`s nasty thing removing thread if you think that might help.
