Windows XP and Trojan Horse

I received a Trojan Horse on my Windows XP Media Center computer. I contacted Symantec and they led me to try to get rid of the virus. But at one points, they were deleting files and restarted the computer and tried to start up in Start Mode. Unfortunatly the computer would not boot up. The computer would freeze up to the "Windows is starting up..." screen but you can move the mouse. Symantec could not do anything because I couldn't get to the desktop. I called Dell and we tried a different things and decided that we had to try to go back to when the computer was at factory settings. We could not even do that. Is there any way to get around this problem? Any tricks to get back to the desktop? HELP!!!!!!

From the startup option that show up pressing F8, try the last know good config. and if that doesnt work, then boot from your XP cd after changing boot options in the bios, and try a repair of XP.
