Windows XP Pro Updates Help???

all of my hotfixes and updates for Win XP pro were deleted. Now when I try to download them again from microsoft my pc just hangs. The farthest I'm able to get is to the Microsoft update screen, it scans my system for critical updates, says I need to downlaod (Background Intelligent Transfer Service ((BITS)) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1. I clicked download and install now and the installation screen pops up but nothing else happens. Any ideas on whats going on here???

also the automatic windows update icon shows up in taskbar next to system clock, it keeps saying downloading updates but wont go past 33%
