Windows XP Login Problem

Whenever I try to go into windows Xp normally the blue screen would comp up with the selectable Icons and you just type in the password and go. Though rather then that for some reason the entire login screen changed so i have to type the user name rather then selecting... Other then that whenever I try to log it it goes for just about 5 seconds but quickly logs me back out before im even able to look a the processes. However everything works normally as it would in Safe mode without the messy login screen to boot.

Before this problem started somthing was going on with the automatic updates and I suppose i may have exited out during the process.. Is it possible to finish and install updates using safe mode?

Hello Syn.Welcome to Techspot.

Have you run Ad-aware recently ? Have you removed any spyware recently ?

If so this may be the solution. It worked for at least one person HERE More HERE

You decide whether it might apply to your situation.

"Boot the pc from the windows setup disk , at the setup screen press R for recovery

at the recovery console type cd system32
type copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe
type exit

now reboot your pc , you should be able to log into windows

goto start , run then type regedit

find the following registerkey :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Userinit string value should be:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

On the damaged installations it's one of these:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,
C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe, C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsaupdater.exe,

In this case edit the string to :

c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,
