windows xp start up

Hi all,
I have a problem with my xp. when i turn on my pc is starts up in the normal way but when i click on my profile to log on it takes ages to go to the main screen. Then when it gets there it takes ages before my icons come up and anything to work. Pc is running kinda slow as well. Any ideas?
