It is my theory that a virus damaged this copy of Win XP home, SP2. Thanks to earlier support in this forum, the viruses are gone. Restoring missing files to windows\system32\wbem and subdirectories repaired (somewhat) the Security snap-in. Now the firewall can be controlled. However, this quick fix created another problem.
Run wmimgmt.msc receives error message :
Snap-in failed to initialize
Name: WMI Control
CLSID:{5c659257-e236-11d2-8899-00104b2afb46}
For a snap-in that works, Selected Dependencies tab receives error: "WBEM error features not available. Upgrade WMI to newer build."
Everytime the program Avg7UpdSvc starts, Security Center reports error that it was unable to establish event queries with WMI to monitor 3rd party antivirus and firewall.
The registry needed edits to get things this far, as well.
I am in need of expert advice to approach this with more discipline.
