XP Boot Problem - Log in, then hangs with blue screen

Well not "the" blue screen. But the computer hangs right after I log in from XP. I've tried using MSConfig to turn off several things, but nothing seems to help. It happens on all users. The odd thing is that if I let it go for awhile and then reset the system, it boots with no problem at all.

I thought it might be a bad CMOS battery, but that's all I could come up with. The system is "clean" of all spyware and viruses.

Any help or ideas much appreciated.

You say "after I log in from XP", are you using a dual-boot system?

Please give us more details about your system, so that we can better help you.

XP Boot Problem

I am running a simple, single boot XP Pro system.

Nothing fancy on the system. I've seen everything out there on why this can be happening all from ghosts in the system to the very simplistic solutions.

What I am looking for is someone, who has experienced this type of behaviour before and has successfully corrected it. BTW I tried BootVis and it did not help.

Have you tried restore, to a restore point before you noticed the slow startup? Have you scanned your hard drive for errors? Have you defragged your hard drive? Have you scanned for virus and spyware?

Try clearing unnecessary prefetch files, see this site: http://www.accessible-devices.com/prefetch.html

Have you added more fonts to your system?

Have you ran disk cleanup?

Perhaps you can find something that is not supposed to be there. The first two analyzer sites are the two better ones, giving you better descriptions.
