XP Hangs with additional memory installed

I have purchased an additional 258 MB for my PC that has 128 MB RAM. There are two RAM slots. When I put in both memory cards, the system startup indicates 256 MB ram, but window hangs during startup without any messages.

When I put either memory card in slot one, the system shows 128 MB RAM, and windows XP runs normally.

My Bios String is: 07/24/2000-i810-W83627HF-6A69MC3DC-00

I believe this string indicates a ChainTech Mother Board, Model 6WSV2.

On chaintech url, my mother board is visually similar to Model 60IA3T.

Chaintech BIOS upgrades are at http://www.chaintechusa.com/tw/eng/Download/

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to identify the cause of XP hanging when both memory cards are installed.

What additional information should I post?

Memory, although it may be the right speed and specs, is a very picky thing.

Chances are, the modules are incompatible with each other. You can prove this if each one will work by itself, but both do not work together.

My recommendation is to return the memory in favor of another brand.

I agree

Thanks for the suggestion Rick. I came to the same conclusion. I had to download a few manuals from ChainTech, in order to be sure that I knew which model my system board was. Then I upgraded the BIOS, and I still have the same problem. In the correct system board memory, they indicate the requirements for the memory boards, and also suggest that 256 boards are incompatiable.

I'll contact the Ebay store where I purchased the memory, and try to return it.

I'll probably end up getting a 128 board from Crucal (?sp)
