XP has lost both my cd-rw and dvd-rom

The other day I was trying to install a program (Nero burning rom) and as soon as I rebooted my system, both the cd-rw (Lite-On LTR-40125S) and the dvd-rom (Lite-On LTD-163D) were no longer recognizable to my system, at least not in the registry.

I've tried uninstalling both drives and adding them back with Add New Hardware in XP. The system will add them back in, but then says that there has been a problem with the hardware installation in the registry. Also, the bios recognizes both drives.

The system restore was turned off at the time, so that won't work. Will anything short of a clean operating system install get my drives back?

about a year ago the same thing happened to me. it was fixed by a reformat and reinstallation of windows. the problem is that the windows operating system device drivers/registry has been corrupted. reformating is the only reasonable solution.
