XP Home freezes on login screen (welcome screen)

hi, there. my problem seems to be that whenever i log onto my xp home it goes to the login screen and then it just crashes/freezes. my mouse and keyboard do not work in normal mode, but they work fine in safe mode. please help!

Start in safe mode. Click Start>run type: sfc.exe /scannow with a space between exe and / Have your Windows CD handy in case it finds any missing/corrupt files. If that doesn't work you could try a BartPe cd. If you have another computer download and burn the BartPe disk, boot the broken computer with it and run the check disk tool. If those don't work or you don't have another working computer boot your computer from the Windows cd and do a repair installation of Windows.
