Hi,

I ran into this forum while googling for help to fix my computer.

In such a boneheaded move, I downloaded and installed a program called Super (media converter).

Upon installing, none of the other applications in the laptop works. Double clicking on firefox will result in a pop up box "firefox.exe is not a valid win32 application", same with virtually all other programs.

It also does not allow me to shut down or restart the computer. The error message is "You do not have permission to shutdown this computer."

My first hunch is Super contained some kind of virus, but Avast was unable to detect anything.

Please kindly share your expertise.

Thanks in advance for your help.

ps. OS is Win XP home SP2

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

That doesn`t sound too good.

Very Important: Before deciding whether you should clean or reformat your system, go and read this thread HERE and decide what it is you want to do.

If after reading the above, you wish to clean your system, do the following.

Go and read the Viruses/Spyware/Malware, preliminary removal instructions. Follow all the instructions exactly.

Post fresh HJT, AVG Antispyware and Combofix logs as Attachments into this thread, only after doing the above.

Also, let me know the results of the Panda Antirootkit scan.

If you can`t follow the instructions due to your problems, then is might be wise to backup your important data and reformat.

Hello Howard,

Thanks for your assistance.

I have followed the instructions in the virus/spyware/malware removal instructions and was able to complete most of them (in safe mode), except for:

- step 8 (download and install adaware). Error message: "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"

- step 15 (hijack this). I can only run it in safe mode. When I tried to run it in normal mode, the error msg "crusty.exe is not a valid win32 application" appeared.

I have attached 3 log files that you have requested. Thank you very much again for your assistance.

Sincerely,
tkumala

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:
NOTE* make sure to only highlight and copy what is inside the quote box nothing out side of it.
Also ..

Pay particular attention to this :-

Make sure the word File:: is on the first line of the text file you save (no blank line above it, & no space in front of it)
Code:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Smab.dll
C:\WINDOWS\x2.64.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\x.264.exe
C:\WINDOWS\meta4.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\RLVorbisDec.ax
C:\WINDOWS\system32\yv12vfw.dll
C:\WINDOWS\MOTA113.exe

Save this as CFScript.txt

Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a fresh HJT log.
