The music is unquestionably the highlight here, and even in Beatbuddy's weakest moments, you might have a hard time refraining from tapping your feet or bobbing your head to the rhythm. The lack of variety in terms of the creatures and obstacles you encounter in the world puts a damper on things, but few games explore song in such an intriguing fashion.

This is a real music game, with every aspect of gameplay so perfectly molded with the music in mind. More importantly, Beatbuddy epitomizes why you should be excited about the indie scene in gaming. This is a tremendously unique, wildly creative endeavor that is a blast to play and even more enjoyable to listen to.

While interaction with the soundtrack is much more limited than the press releases may suggest, the game’s constantly changing sound will keep you hooked throughout the six or so hours of play time. As a debut title Beatbuddy hits all the right notes and comes highly recommended.

Overall Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians was a joy to play. I had a great time playing through the game, experiencing the puzzles and music. While the final puzzle and ending wan’t quite as “climatic” as I would have hoped, in the end it wasn’t about the destination but the game’s journey.

The games soundtrack and art style are its saving grace, but the overall story was a little lacklustre, albeit comical at times.
