Samsung SSD Magician Software

The Samsung 470 Series support the Windows 7 TRIM command, however for those not running Microsoft's latest operating system Samsung has a solution called SSD Magician. The Samsung SSD Magician software is a small application (less than 10MB) that provides users running Windows XP with SP3 or above, Windows Vista with SP1 or above, Windows Server 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit) with SP2 or above, and Windows Server 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit) the ability to use the TRIM function to restore lost performance.

The software application can be used to measure the current performance of the Samsung 470 drive looking at sequential read/write and random read/write performance. This makes it very easy for users to keep an eye on how their Samsung 470 Series drive is performing and if any kind of drive degradation is occurring.

Should the drive need to be tuned up the performance optimization option can be executed to restore original performance. This is a very handy feature for those not using Windows 7 and it's something not all SSDs offer. Once the SSD Magician has completed optimizing the drive it runs the benchmark portion of the software and shows how the drive performed before the optimization and how it is performing after. Because we tested under Windows 7 there was next to no difference once the drive had gone through the optimization process.

The last noteworthy feature of the Samsung SSD Magician software is the firmware update option. However as it stands the initial release firmware is the only version available, so we were unable to test this feature. Still it's nice to see Samsung offering such an easy way for users to keep their drive up to date.
