My current spec is:
AMD64 3500+ 2.2ghz
1gb RAM
Abit AV8-3rd Eye (Socket 939)
NVIDIA 6800GT 256mb
This PC doesnt seem to be up for the task anymore it crashes all the time using programs like AE/Flash & Photoshop and I would like to upgrade. After some research I am interested in building a new computer using Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz (Socket LGA775). This really looks to me the best value for money processor.
I want to spend around £500-600 ($1020-1230) in total and this will cover the CPU/Board/RAM/GFXcard
For the other components I am VERY loosely considering:

Or do I go for 4gb RAM considering the price vs performance gain?

This is a very rough outline as to what I wish to buy, what do you think? -be critical! I don't want to pay for anything I won't use and this will be my only upgrade for perhaps 3-5years so I must choose and time it very wisely.
My primary purpose for upgrading is college work (I am a multimedia student) I spend a lot of time using After Effects, 3DS MAX, Flash and Photoshop and understand how much of a performance increase (especially in 3DS Max and After Effects) I could achieve by upgrading
I also like to play games a lot and looking forward want to be able to run upcomming games ie. Gears of War PC/Crysis/World in conflict
