Upgraded CPU not being recognized

How do I tell which mobo revision I have? Checking in the CPU-Z it says REV 1.xx, which I'm assuming is the revision. However, the I do not know whether the xx is actually a revision or if it's just having trouble reading the exact type. The manual revision is 1.05 but that doesn't sound like what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance for the help.

Open your PC. Somewehere on the motherboard (between the PCI-slots) is the word Asus and the Motherboard type (P3B-F) printed. Nearby you should find the revision nr.

P3-1.0 GHz(slot1) IS supported on P3B-F, but only since mobo-revision 1.04 (what is yours?) and since BIOS 1008.001 (yours should be OK 1008.004).

Ah, thank you. It seems I have revision 1.04. So the question is, is that 'since mobo-revision 1.04' inclusive or not? And if so, what might be the problem. Again, thanks.

You either have jumpers on the the mobo, or settings in the BIOS to tell it what CPU you have. Check the manual how the set the different multiplicators etc..
Also, if your memory is PC66, that does not like the PIII. Try PC100 or even PC133

I was hoping I wouldn't have to fool with the jumpers. Drats. Now I have to figure out how to set them, or change them to use this JumperFree mode because I don't see settings in my manual for a 1gig chip. It only goes up to 700Mhz. Or it might just be time to call in a tech-minded friend. Thanks for your help.

tHEN get that 1 gig cpu running in that board for the person,Maybe he will reward you for all you know :haha:

Another thing to consider (& the Asus website isn't very clear) is if that motherboard supports the 133mhz FSB version of that CPU. I think the i815 chipset supported such an FSB in general but you never know.

Which CPU do I need EXACTLY ?

As I am also an ASUS P3B-F owner, I am monitoring this forum. Currently I am running this board with a PIII 500 Mhz. I also want to update this board to the maximum possible CPU speed. As I am technical but not a PC-specialist I would like to have your 'expert' advise.

So I have checked the bios >> currently 1006 : I have to update this to 1008.004 ; no problem for me

I have checked the revision of this board ; it is 1.04

So normally it must be possible to install such an 1 Ghz CPU. My questions are :

Is this CPU still available on the market ? Prduct nr ? Website?

If I can find such a slot 1 1Ghz CPU ; which other parameters should I verify before I buy it ?

It should be also possible to work with an adapter board to 370 and to install another type of CPU. What are the (dis)advantages ? Limitations ?

Can maybe somebody help me with partnumbers ?

I have upgraded successfully to a PIII 1Ghz chip. It runs fine though I had a friend fool with the jumpers so the board would recognize it correctly. I ran a quick search on Google and it looks like there are still a few out there, however... The disadvantage to this motherboard is the memory more than the chip. I was looking to upgrade the memory and it looks like I can only go up to 768 MB of SDRAM because the board won't recognize anything bigger than a 256 SDRAM dimm. So I'd recommend looking for a good mobo/pc chip combo if you could. I do notice a slight improvement in speed with the 1Ghz chip, but I could use the memory more. Hope that helps some.

Many thanks for your advise. I have bought from www.abgcomputers.nl an upgrade with an Intel Celeron 1300Mhz Tualatin CPU. My motherboard is an asus P3B-F 1.04 with bios 1008.004. My PC (previous PIII 500 Mhz) starts now with the message PII 1200 MHZ. When I verify with windows booted it is a PIII 1300 Mhz. How can I correct the message in my bios ?
