Notebook doesn't boot

Hi guys! It's my first time here and I need help with my laptop. It's a HP dv1000 and it doesn't start. After pressing the on/off switch, the keyboard lights turn on
, apparently it tests the DVD drive and the CPU cooling fan starts up for a few seconds and then stops. Nothing else happens. No memory test, no POST, nothing.
Battery is charging regularly and the power inlet is OK too.
Help!!

Try this...

1. Unplug power cord
2. Take out the battery
3. Plugin Power cord
4. Turn on the power

Now did it turn on or not?

Thanks you both.
Before posting my question I've searched the Guides but I've got nothing close to my problem. Maybe I didn't look as much as I should.
And earlier I proceeded as Tipstir suggested with no response. The BIOS doesn't load at all. It seems the POST stops just after checking the DVD drive.
I took off the memory modules, HDD and nothing...
In fact, I disassembled the laptop completely and checked all connections. A friend told me that the processor could be fried. Is this the only posible cause?

Sounds like a motherboard problem. Best thing to do is throw it out or take it to a shop, talk to the manufacturer.

Did eMachines make it???? If so you got a pile of S#!&

Can be.. It's clear this needs more tools and spare parts than I have at home.
I'll take it to a shop.
Thank you all for the help.
