Hopefully, Hidden Path will eventually fix the problems so that epic eight-player matches with hundreds of units on each side can entertain strategy fans until our civilization, like ancient Rome, falls and fades into the annals of history.

This high-definition edition of the classic real-time strategy game adds little more than...

There is absolutely no reason to trade money like that for a game like this, for a mouldy time-capsule that will likely mar your memories of the original. This time, history needs to be left to rest.

In the end I can’t deny the game is fun. It’s the same game you all love and remember, and is everything that made it a hit 14 years ago. I just can’t be sure if it’s worth a $19.99 purchase, and for a player relatively new to the series, this experience left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

If you’re interested in playing a classic RTS - remastered for modern computers - Age of Empires 2 HD should be a high-priority purchase.

The graphics are alright, but not as great as I was hoping for. Again, the true strength lies in robust multiplayer and Steam Workshop support, both of which depend on the community to thrive. All in all, Age of Empires II HD is a game that I’m more than happy to conquer.

As a result, if you still have the original version of the game, you're probably better off playing that at least until a few updates are released for the HD Edition.

Age of Empires II HD could have been a patch, as well as a full digital release. Microsoft chose the latter, and that’s fine. There are people out there that will absolutely love being able to return. It’s one of the best games ever released on PC, but this isn’t a great re-release.

Back in college, I once spent an entire Spring Break playing Age of Empires III. Sure, my social life suffered for that week, but it was one of the most incredible gaming experiences I’ve ever had. In fact, AOE3 is the game that opened my eyes to...

Instead, the re-release should be considered by anyone with an itch to revisit the well-loved game or anyone looking for a new and entertaining strategy title at a reasonably low price.

By GamePlanet on 70

Those who loved Age of Empires II should happily indulge in some nostalgia with this HD facelift. Anyone new to the game will be frustrated by the lack of modern control systems and responsive hot keys.
