Shadowrun is one of the classic pen and paper RPG settings, a wonderful mash-up of classic cyberpunk tropes with the idea that the Mayan Calendar was right, and when the ‘end of the world' ticked over, it was not the end of everything, but merely one age...

For those who love classic turn-based role-playing elements set in a fantasy cyberpunk universe, Shadowrun Returns is certainly one game you have to...

Shadowrun Returns is a Kickstarter funded game. Games funded this way are becoming ever more common, although they have pitfalls. First, the developers of the game are constrained by whatever they said they were going to make in the Kickstarter. If it...

Not a particularly remarkable or lengthy game, but still worth picking up if you're a Shadowrun fan or just looking for a good narrative to fill the...

The total package that is Shadowrun Returns reminds me of a pen-and-paper game's core rulebook. The main focuses are on mechanics and flavor and on creating tools to make your own stories. The story is fun and authentic but not very...

Between the varied, challenging combat encounters and the somewhat above par (if barely interactive) plot, it’s worth the 20ish hours it will take to complete. Like the life of a Shadowrunner, it drags in places and shines in others.

Intrepid imagineers will see beyond the included content and into a future of cyberpunk tales galore. But at present, Shadowrun Returns is an enjoyable role-playing game with the scent of a classic, if not the essence.

Disclaimer: I don’t know if it matters to anyone, but I want to get it out in the open at the start that I am a backer of Shadowrun Returns. I don’t think it compromises my critical ability regarding the game, at least no more than any other game I’ve...

Shadowrun Returns is a beautiful and flexible roleplaying game in an excellent, grungey setting, though it does feel on the slight side and is perhaps too choreographed. A few baffling design decisions - particularly the awful save system - also keep this comeback kid from being quite as triumphant as it deserved to be.

A fan-funded reboot of a SNES game based on a cyberpunk-themed pen and paper RPG sounds like a recipe for inaccessibility, but Shadowrun Returns winds up being as immediate and fresh-feeling as it is reverent to its past. An isometric...

There's more to Shadowrun Returns though. Much more. And it won't be until the community gets its hands on the editor, starts remixing the current material and generating its own, that the game will really begin to blossom. When it does, the patience of the hardcore will be well rewarded.

And honestly, we hope it doesn’t end - we hope that community takes to the game faster than Vin Diesel to a new Fast and Furious film, because this is the type of title that deserves to be played by many, and live a long and prosperous, cyberpunk life.

But the bite-sized scope and limited choices available make me more interested to see what Shadowrun Returns will be a year from now, after the community has used the included mod tools to build on it, than in what it is today.

The fact that this game costs less than a night at the movies (Steam price is $19.99, though you can pick it up for 10% off for a very short span after you read this) and delivers a storyline you’ll want to play more than once, as well as the promise of infinite expansion, it’s very easy to recommend. Welcome back, Shadowrun - welcome back to the Sprawl.

Even if you never played the tabletop game or the original Shadowrun console games, Harebrained Schemes has crafted a potent argument for joining in on the fun. Here’s hoping this reawakening is just the beginning of a new lease on life for the Sixth World.

By Polygon on 70

Shadowrun is still a singular take on a pair of genres that have been drowned by cliché elsewhere, and it's exciting to consider where the game can go from here. Here's hoping that Harebrained is willing to go a little further down the rabbit hole if they do.

Given that the game was funded by fans eager for a Shadowrun game, backers should find this game incredibly rewarding. But any person eager for the heyday of the pen & paper days of RPGs should find this a nice blast from the past.

A lot of gamers that still have a bad taste in their mouth from the Cross-Play Shadowrun that was made for PC and Xbox 360 need to play this game. It’s a true revival of Shadowrun and the perfect HD upgrade that the series needed with a soundtrack that takes you back in time.

The title is a tough experience for newcomers but, provided they keep at it and continue to explore the many complex mechanics, it's quite rewarding, especially for those who enjoyed the comebacks of other franchises like Fallout or XCOM in recent years.
