Pros

Additions really matter, such as new diplomacy options, social policies, and so on.
Combat system changes completely change the fee.
Language and historical alignments bring a much greater sense of realism.
The hours just melt away.
An excellent refinement of the classic Civ formula.
Beautiful graphics.
Interface is superb with everything in close proximity.
Game is streamlined for newcomers to the Civilization franchise.

Cons

Mac version needs help.
Still some AI glitches and multiplayer "roughness" needing a patch.
Unit pathfinding can be substandard at times.
I have lost way too much sleep time playing it.
New city-states feature is a double-edged sword.
Games lack a sense of character.
