The HD Media Router 3000 wasn’t the fastest in our 5GHz frequency band testing. With the router setup within 15 feet of our test system we managed just over 180mbps, a respectable number.Moving on to the 2.4GHz band we managed just over 101 Mbps,...

Despite the DIR-857’s performance coming up short compared to our new zero-point, we still think it’s a very good router.

In the end, the DIR-857 falls short of earning the Hardware.Info Gold Award. However, the 2.4 GHz performance is good enough for a Silver Award, even if the current £155 price tag is on the high side.

D-Link's DIR-857 router, is a decent device and some will be attracted to the built-in SD card reader, but less-than-impressive performance, some issues with rebooting, and some lag streaming high-definition means there are better choices for high-end dual-band routers.

Although the DIR 857 is an excellent device, we question whether it's worth spending so much on an 802.11n router right now, when the newer and potentially faster 802.11ac standard is just around the corner. But if you're after excellent performance today from a known standard, the DIR-857 is a good choice.

Though not perfect, the D-Link DIR-857 HD Media Router 3000 makes a great router for homes thanks to its top-notch performance on the 5GHz band and a nice set of features.

If your heart is set on one of the "HD Media" D-Links, I think the two-stream ("N600") DIR-827 is the better buy and slightly better performer.

Are you one of those fellows who likes to pipe HD media around the home using nothing more than wireless technology? D-Link has a router than you may be interested in.
