Glare offers an inventive mechanic that could have given rise to a memorable adventure, but then fails to build meaningfully on that early promise. This is an entertaining pit stop that can tide you over on your journey to a bigger, brighter galaxy.
You are the Shiner. The Shiner is a powerful guardian with a single objective: to obliterate the darkness that has recently begun encroaching upon the galaxy. Armed with magical light that allows you to push away foul mist and nasty creatures, you...
Glare is a solid and beautiful platformer with a light mechanic that demonstrates that the time-honored genre still kicks with life. Its occasionally brutal challenges do much to make up for its all-too-brief running time, but a lack of extra features and repetitive boss fights discourage replays.
You know that feeling you get when you play a great indie game and know it is going to stick with you? If I asked you to list the 5 greatest, most memorable indie games you’ve played, I bet I could guess some of the contenders. Games like Limbo, Bastion, and Braid make the list, right? Glare feels like it’s one of those games that make the list right from the start.
Glare confidently puts something notably different within the confines of a strict, conventional genre. Though it lacks any glaring faults, I'm not sure it always works. It it interesting, though, and doesn't overstay its welcome.
It’s a great game, but it’s for the hardcore platformer crowd, maybe a few casual as well. It has great gameplay, great level design, and plenty of challenge. If you want to try it, it’s on Steam now.
