WD's own twist to the hybrid hard drive, the Black2 is a dual drive solution, fusing individual 120GB solid-state and 1TB 5400rpm mechanical drives into a single 2.5-inch package. The Black^2 will be seen as two separate drives on your system, even though they share the same SATA 6Gb/s connector and take a single slot, meaning it can fit in your laptop as a faster disk replacement without issue.

While it may not be the fastest or most affordable option, the Black2 works as expected and fills a gap in the storage market, which seems worthy enough of our outstanding award. Kudos WD for trying to shake things up a little.

Dissapointing. While the mechanical HDD's performance is not surprising since its a WD Slim Blue...

Hybrid drives have been around for some time now but not in the 2.5 inch category. A combo SSD + HDD profile that can replace a laptop or mobile drive with some smart technology is a welcome advancement. Migrating the OS+ from a HDD to SSD can offer some mighty big...

The Western Digital Black² Dual Drive is truly a unique and innovative drive. It is not a hybrid drive, but a combo drive - a combination of a solid state drive and a hard disk drive in one package. In the past, laptop users would have to choose...

The WD Black2 is faster than a mechanical hard drive, but it's not nearly as fast as a comparably priced 500- to 512GB SSD. Its SSD write speed is particularly disappointing.

It is pretty safe to say that we don't see a huge amount of consumer-facing innovation in the hard drive space. Most of the significant advancements over the past few years have revolved around fitting larger and larger capacities into smaller and...

Solid state storage as we know it today is certainly the way forward and this is proven by the fact that it is the storage medium of choice for any enthusiast or performance user. Whilst the speeds are fantastic, there is still a slight cause for concern...

At $199 and with proper caching software, the Black2 would be a totally different product. Right now it's an expensive niche product that only serves a small user base. If you meet the two conditions at the top, then I have no problem recommending the Black2 but otherwise you should look elsewhere.

Pairing an SSD with a hard drive isn't exactly a new concept. For years, enthusiasts have been using SSDs to improve their boot and application load times while storing infrequently accessed files on inexpensive hard drives. With the Black², Western...

So what can we say about the Western Digital Black2 Dual Hard drive? First you have to understand what Western Digital's goal was. They wanted to give you the ability to fit two drives in a single drive bay and give you a performance boost over a...

The Western Digital Black2 Dual Drive is certainly a mouthful to name but thankfully it's worth the effort as it really does deliver on being an ingenious upgrade for anyone out there with either a PC or laptop that only has room for one 2.5in drive....

It's a pity because the combination of SSD and magnetic drive in a non-hybrid package is a very compelling proposition and no mean feat of engineering. Unfortunately for WD, it also has to add up as a value proposition and at this price point, it's not quite there.

At a lower price point, the Western Digital Black2 internal hybrid drive could be a contender. At $299, it's just too...

But at £250 for the Black 2 it's worth looking into standalone 512 GB SSDs, which currently cost around the same. While such a standalone SSD has less than half the capacity of the Black 2, it will perform much better and will fit any computer or console.

The Black 2 is a novel solution to a laptop storage problem. You can have the fast performance of an SSD or the cheap price of a traditional hard disk. Performance on a budget is difficult. ??To blend both decent storage capacity and high performance you...

We actually have two looks at capacities for the Black² drive as the SSD and HDD are reported separately. The HDD portion of the drive yields 931GB addressable by the user and the SSD offers up 111GB. Each is the expected capacity when moving from the...

Innovation is hard to come by in terms of mass data storage. Mechanical platter drives dominated the computer industry for decades thanks largely to standardised manufacturing processes. Drive makers would tinker with the technology - a few added RPMs...

The WD Black 2 isn’t a barn burner, as our benchmarks have shown. To squeeze a 120GB solid state drive and 1TB hard disk drive, into a single 2.5” device, with 9.5mm Z-Height, WD had to make some obvious concessions. Don’t let the synthetic numbers...
