3D Spotlight : Tweaking : Deus Ex tweak guide

Deus Ex tweak guide
Last updated on December 11, 2000 by Thomas McGuire

Deus Ex, quite possibly the best game of the year was released with only one thing missing – Multiplayer support. Although this has been remedied now with the release of the new Deus Ex patch.

Overclocking, Deus Ex is sensitive to overclocking, if your system is overclocked & you have problems running Deus Ex, e.g. lockups during the game, try restoring the machine or video card to its default speed, or applying more cooling.

Install DirectX 8 (or later) on your system; you need it to use Direct3D & other features. DirectX 8 has also been shown to improve frame rates in Direct3D too.

Patch it; get the latest patch for Deus Ex, currently that is the 1.009f BETA patch, available for Windows 9x/Me/NT/2000 at 3DFiles. This will ensure you have the most current version of the game & all the included fixes/optimizations as a result. Of particular importance is that the new patch includes multiplayer support.

Drivers, it is essential to get the latest drivers for you video card & sound card. Check our Drivers page for links to many different hardware manufacturers drivers pages. This may solve (some) display or audio problems you might have encountered. This is particularly important for nVidia card owners, who should have the latest Official (Or otherwise) drivers installed.

If you get menu distortion while using an nVidia card try (re)setting the Texel Alignment to 3.

If you are experiencing problems with your mouse try updating your mouse drivers or Unticking DirectInput in the Input menu.

If these few tips do not answer your concerns you should check out our comprehensive Unreal Tournament FAQ (As Deus Ex uses the same game engine), which contains many additional troubleshooting solutions & more. This guide has been prepared on the 1.009f version of Deus Ex, although it will apply to the retail version or later also.

Advanced options

IMPORTANT - Unlike Unreal, or Unreal Tournament getting access to the Advanced options menu is not too easy. To be able to get into it use the following procedure (thanks Russell Tharp).

Open the User.ini in the DeusEx\System folder. Add/Edit the following 2 lines.

NOTE – While you don’t need to use the T key, it is important that you use both uppercase & lowercase of the letter you select. When in the game press the T key to bring up Say>, delete what appears. Type in preferences, then hit Enter.

Please write down this if necessary, as it won’t be repeated later on when Advanced Options is mentioned.
