The Game Awards: Witcher 3 walks away with Game of the Year, Konami prevents Kojima from attending

  1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt came out on top at The Game Awards yesterday, winning several categories - including the coveted Game of the Year award. The massive RPG faced stiff competition from the likes of Fallout 4, Metal Gear Solid 5, and Bloodborne, but judges decided that CD Projekt Red’s game was worthy of the top prize.

The Witcher 3 also beat Fallout 4 and the excellent Pillars of Eternity to claim the Best RPG award. The success of the game, both critically and commercially, also helped its Polish creators win Developer of the Year. CD Projekt Red co-founder Marcin Iwinski said that he made the trek “all the way from Poland, where sex on unicorns is a common thing,” referring to one of the game’s famous sequences.

Metal Gear Solid 5 may not have received Game of the Year, but it did win the Best Action-Adventure Game category and Best Score or Soundtrack. Other winners from the night included Splatoon for best shooter, Her Story for best narrative, Rocket League for best independent game, and Mortal Kombat X for best fighting game.

The other big news from the The Game Awards was the absence of Metal Gear Solid mastermind Hideo Kojima. He was expected to appear at the LA show, but according to the night’s host, Geoff Keighley, Kojima was prevented from attending by Metal Gear Solid publisher Konami.

“Mr. Kojima had every intention of being with us tonight,” Keighley said. “But unfortunately, he was informed by a lawyer representing Konami just recently that he would not be allowed to travel to tonight’s awards ceremony to accept any awards. He’s still under an employment contract, it’s disappointing, and it’s inconceivable to me that an artist like Hideo would not be allowed to come here and celebrate with his peers and his fellow teammates."

It’s been a turbulent year for Konami and Kojima, which began with the company removing his name and logo from MGSV promotional material. It does look like the designer is now finished with Konami, even though the studio still claims he’s just on vacation.

Earlier this week, a Konami PR representative accepted trophies for Metal Gear Solid 5 in Kojima’s place at the PlayStation Awards. At yesterday’s Game Awards event, it was Kiefer Sutherland – who voiced the main character in the game – that accepted MGSV’s prize for Best Action-Adventure.

Good on Witcher 3 for winning so many awards. They truly deserved it. Whereas nowadays RPGS are just based on a template and are annual refreshes of the same thing but in a new setting, Witcher 3 was an absolute breath of fresh air. I simply can't go back to other RPGS after playing something that epic. Can't wait for the expansion!

I agree. I absolutely love Fallout 4 and Metal Gear Solid 5, but I think there was something really special about The Witcher 3 that made it stand above the others.

Way to go Witcher 3, the game I was most looking forward to this year, upgraded my GPU to play the game, and got the game for free by doing so, and I never played it, it's installed, updated, but I haven't done so much as launch it to see how it runs, which it does quite well. Maybe I'll start playing it now that it's game of the year. Understandably it beat out Fallout 4, another game I started and haven't gone back to yet.

I wanted to enjoy that game but the godawful console-style control scheme killed it for me. Did they ever fix that?

The good news is that you'd be playing Witcher 3 for the first time after it's got a few big patches. The inventory changes alone are worth it.

Wasn't surprised with Witcher 3, being game of the year. That game was amazing.

Nope and I would have to agree with you. I will still stand by and say that The Witcher 2 was the best of the series and I'm talking about the original release where it was harder than any of the Dark souls game to date. They dumbed down too much of the game and forced a controller down our throats.

The controls aren't bad because they worked best with a controller, they are bad because they are bad. If Witcher 3 played like Batman or Shadow of Mordor, there wouldn't be a problem.

It's absolutely killing me not knowing exactly what's going on at Konami. Hell, I wouldn't mind finding out for my Christmas gift this year--so tantalizing.

Denying a person involved the right to accept an award for their own and their team's work, and sending a generic person in their place is really messed up. Im surprised Sutherland was able to go for himself, but then again contracts and lawyer'nese never make sense to me.

just make another '24' tv series kief!

(game developers, '24' the game - free to try/own provided player beats the game in 24 hours or less? ;) ; if this happens, I wonder how much torture a digital character can endure at the hands of jack bauer until he confesses to whatever crimes he has committed.)

Wow. When did Konami turn into such a scumbag company?! I used to love their games back in the 8-bit and 16-bit era, but wouldn't touch anything they make now with a ten foot clown pole!

$60 says this Konami stuff is an elaborate and genius ploy designed by Kojima to generate consumer attention and set the stage for an upcoming project.

Alternatively, he must have done something really, really bad.

The Witcher 3 is for me, the best game that has come in the last 10 years or more, it's just magical.

I was rooting for this game to win GAME OF THE YEAR and I'm glad it won. CD Projekt Red have done an excellent job of making sure this game is one of the best action/rpg open world game out there and they have succeeded. I can go on and on about how great this game is but the reviews speak for themselves. AngyJoe is the best (just my opinion). For those who have played it already, I highly recommend that you use School of the Roach mod for it. I promise you it turns it into a completely new game. It's very hard for me to go back playing it without this mod. Again congrats to the developers for putting out such an outstanding piece of work and I hope other developers will go back to actually caring about the games they put out instead of milking you for every penny you earned.

I'm so excited. Kojima's non-compete/non-disclosure / public punching bag agreement is valid until the ball drops on new year's eve though. I have faith though that our lord and Santa will hear the very, very loud prayers I scream to him while I'm at the library / grocery store / shaving at the sink at the gym with my balls on the counter - and intercede with a Christmas miracle.

    Amen.
