Dual core chips to have dual caches

By Derek Sooman

Think that up and coming chips from Intel and AMD that have dual cores will share a single cache? Think again. Future processors, such as the version of Opteron coming in 2005 and Montecito, a future member of Intel's Itanium family also slated for next year, will have dual caches to go along with their dual cores.

Larger caches sizes are also on the cards too; chips with 1MB L2 cache will have L3 cache sizes of 12 or even 24MB.
