Problems getting "Opteron Inside" a Dell

By Derek Sooman

According to inside information, Dell is in some pretty big talks right now with AMD about getting their Opteron processors inside some Dell machines. Both parties are pretty keen to get their union under way, however there are a couple of obstacles in their way. Or rather, one big obstacle - the "Intel Inside" programme.

What is that? Well, its a cooperative marketing funding campaign Intel set up over ten years ago. And, of course, Dell is right in there in the thick of it. Its deeply embroiled with Intel and the Intel Inside programme is worth a lot of money to Dell. Going with AMD, then, is bound to be messy.

We just have to stay tuned to see how this all turns out. Right now, its anyone's guess.

  1. Well, Dell is already selling computers with AMD cpu's...Just not on the open market, but to large customers they can be very accommodating. Let's just hope they can handle this the same way they do that, and that it's not just another "Dell to support AMD" story yet again...
