Half-Life 2 in stores now, doesn't mean you can play it yet

By on November 14, 2004, 2:11 AM
Reports keep coming from everywhere, stores such as BestBuy, GameStop and WalMart are already selling long-awaited Half-Life 2 game despite of the fact that the official release date was November 16th.

Unfortunately for gamers, you won't be able to play the game just yet. In order to successfully install HL2 you will need to register your copy through Steam, the system is not accepting authentication requests yet however. Here's an official update from Valve:

If you have purchased a copy of Half-Life 2, we are sorry you are still waiting to play. This is not Valve's choice. Vivendi is insisting that the game has not yet been released, and has threatened that Valve would be in violation of its contract if we activate the Half-Life 2 Steam authentication servers at this time.

Thanks for your patience and we will update you when we have more news to share.

Before rushing into conclusions I think we should give Vivendi some hours to reconsider on their strategies, after all the anticipated release just happened during a weekend. If it's the case they don't make registration available until Tuesday, this will be a very dissapointing behaviour that may push legal owners of the game to look for other illegal alternatives to activate the game, that would be such a shame.

Well, the release date is officially 11/16 which isn't until Tuesday. If people got it early they can just SUCK IT UP and wait like those of us with the electronic download through Steam. I get the impression that if you DL from Steam, Vivendi doesn't get money for the game. So if you'd like to send a message to Vivendi.... :)

What is it about people and HL2?Are you afraid that if you don't get to play the game now, it'll suck by the time it's activated? Is there a "best played before by" date of Nov 16th that I've somehow overlooked?I'd rather direct the anger (from those who have bought retail) to the shops you've bought the game from, as they've mislead you to believe that the release date is no longer Nov 16th () but today...And if you weren't mislead by them, what do you have to be angry for?You should've known by now that the release date is the 16th and not the 15th nor 14th, and thus the game would first become playable on the 16th... As for the buy Steam instead, that isn't quite correct. VUG does get money from the Steam sales, but much less then than they would otherwise. But as I said, why sc**w VUG when it's BB, EB & the likes who's the real culprits here...

Reviews are starting to come out. Gamespot and IGN posted reviews this afternoon. I have yet to read the full 5 pages from IGN. I'll have to read a few more reviews to see if it lives up to the hype.
