More uses planned for the "Cell" processor

We recently reported on Cell processor details that were unveiled to the public. This time around Sony and partners IBM and Toshiba made clear in a joint statement that the Cell processor would be used in more than just the PlayStation 3. Immediate plans include IBM working with Sony on a Cell-powered workstation PC that will be made available next year.

"That machine is intended mainly for creating computer animation and enabling other demanding graphics tasks. Both Sony and Toshiba [also] expect to begin selling high-definition TV sets powered by the Cell in 2006."
