U.K. telecom giant BT is to start a testing program for faster broadband services in the UK, with speeds of up to 8mbps on the card. The catch? For the moment, you have to be a BT employee.

BT Retail announced Monday that it is engaging in wholesale trials of 8mbps ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) services, but these high speeds will only be made available to its own staff--cutting down the number available to actual consumers.

Initially, just 2,000 lines in London and Strathclyde will be tested in the first phase of the trials. But this does indicate strongly (if any proof were needed) that broadband speeds are set to zoom in the very near future.
