Since security is a subject after my own heart, I was pleased to hear that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has sanctioned the University of California Berkeley to help initiate a $19m government-funded cybersecurity research project. With the support of big name companies like Cisco, HP, IBM, Microsoft and Symantec, the project is expected to receive nearly $19m over five years, with the possibility of a five-year, $20m extension.

"The cybersecurity community has long feared that it would take an electronic Pearl Harbour for people to realize the scale of disruptions possible from a concerted attack by terrorists." - S. Shankar Sastry, UC Berkeley professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences.
