Using the Internet a little too much at work? Well, better keep a lid on it then, just in case you fall victim to the same fate as nine employees of Renfrewshire Council in the UK, who have been sacked for inappropriate use of the internet and e-mail at work.

Renfrewshire Council declined to comment on the nature of the content being browsed by the staff, but it has emerged that another three have been demoted, and two have received written warnings.

A council spokesman said: "Like many organisations, the council has a clear policy on the use of internet and e-mail which states that access can be monitored to ensure appropriate use.

"If breaches of that policy are identified, disciplinary procedures can be taken forward."
