A Palm smart phone that runs Microsoft software? Why yes, it’s the new Treo 700w, which uses the latest Windows Mobile software. Available now from Verizon Wireless, the phone also uses Verizon's high-speed, wireless broadband EV-DO network.

For those who go by the numbers the 700w is a dual-band CDMA, EV-DO cell phone handset (800MHz for voice and 1900MHz for data) and is backwards compatible with the 1xRTT data standard. The phone ruses the Windows Mobile 5.0.2.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition, with an Intel 312MHz XScale processor inside it. The 700w comes with 128MB of memory, 60MB of which is dedicated for user memory. As for size, it measures 5.1 by 2.3 by 0.9 inches and weighs in at 6.4 ounces.
Additional features include a 1.3 mega pixel camera, Bluetooth 1.2 connectivity, a MultiMedia card–SD/SDIO expansion slot, and a 240 by 240 pixel colour screen. The removable lithium-ion battery is good for about 4.7 hours per charge.

  1. Great! How much? Only for the rich and famous?
  2. Wow, the battery life needs some serious work. Other than that it looks really cool. More importantly, after the last news post about Microsofts plans for the future, the question is how will devices like this integrate with computers and other electronics in the future? Will you be able to pull data up that resides on your hard disk with the increased bandwiths that are being talked about? Use it to schedule your HTPC to record your favorite show while you're running late from the office? This will be a nice added piece to the puzzle if Microsoft is sucessful. Sort of like a king of multi-media remotes.

[/quote]I agree wholeheartedly; 4.7 hours per charge seems kind of weak compared to all the other nice features presented. The phone design is interesting: a conglomeration of Palm Pilots and cell phones. It will certainly give people who uses Palm Pilots religiously a new option. Microsoft is expanding everywhere; I never thought it would put a foot in the phone market.

  6. i think 4.7 hours is not too bad...probbably 3 charges per week..it´s like a cell phone...that feature won´t stop me from taking one...price will stop me...
  7. I think they could also improve the camera as well. That will probably be next month.
  8. last think i need is a BSOD on my mobile.i'll keep my SE K300
  9. WOW. This looks like a really great phone. I wish I could afford one.and, yeah, really thanks for the link to the pictures!!!
  10. How long until the hackers get involved eh?
  11. Aside from the screen resolution, the hardware specs are better than my Treo 650, fortunately not by much. I hope Palm releases a second version of the 700, one with Palm OS. I'm sure people would want to be able to choose the OS they want for their smartphone, not to have to choose between OS with spec disadvantages/gains.
