Apple makes immediate move to Merom-based systems
Apple Computer has plans to immediately begin work to adopt Intel Corp.'s latest mobile processors. Recently, Intel rolled out their new Merom Core 2 Duo processors, and Apple is keen to incorporate these into their product lines as soon as possible. The company is due to receive mass shipments of the new Merom Core 2 Duo processors by the first week of September, and plans to be among the first PC manufacturers to utilise the new chips in their systems.
Intel has said that there shall be five different clock speed models of Merom, those being 2.0GHz, 2.16GHz, and 2.33GHz (which use a 4MB Level 2 cache) as well as 1.66GHz and 1.8GHz variants which have 2MB of Level 2 cache. It is not known which of these chips will be used by Apple in their product lines as yet, but the 4MB models are the most likely.

Maybe 4MB parts in the MacBook Pro & 2MB parts in the MacBooks. Speed could be an issue though as the current MacBooks have speeds up to 2.13GHz & bringing them down to 1.8GHz would not go well with potential buyers I reckon. |

What do people think about the likelihood of an easy upgrade path for existing MacBooks and MacBook Pros? Will there be so many motherboard changes that a simple plugin upgrade won't work? |

Seeing how the current motherboards in the Macbooks Pros have problems (whinning, heat, etc.); it might be a good idea to go with a newer platform (maybe mroe mature?). |
