Simply RISC releases CPU based off Sun's UltraSparc

One of the first products based on Sun's dream of an open development for Sun hardware has been built. Based on the UltraSparc T1 with eight cores, the new server is built by Simply RISC and contains only a single core. Designed to run UNIX and Linux, the chip is dubbed “S1 Core”. Some binary Linux distros, such as Ubuntu, are already coming with stock support for the S1. Could this be the start of a reemergence of Sun in enterprise-class hardware?
