125,000 movie downloads gives Disney $50 Million
Selling movies online is already proving itself to be a viable and profitable venture. Disney has pulled in $50 Million across 125,000 downloads in the past year alone. Selling only a handful (75) of their available movies, this pioneering effort between Apple and Disney has more than proven itself. Likely, we are going to see a lot of companies following suit, and we already know that some big names like Warner Bros. are getting ready to roll out similar offerings. While I rather dislike DRM technologies and I'm not much of a fan of iTunes either, it's great to see such an ease-of-use offering proving itself. I'd much rather pay a few dollars for a movie and be able to download it then wait for a DVD in the mail or go to a store. Provided they get a library of movies suitable to match, according to Netflix, online movie rental/purchase will soon probably overtake traditional sales.
