If you have followed spyware news the past few years, you'll definitely remember the fiacso Sony had a while back regarding rootkits being secretly installed on people's machines when they plugged in a Sony disc. The dust is finally settling over that incident, and Sony will be shelling out $1.5 Million to the states of Texas and California to settle. To individual consumers who were hurt by the software, the rewards are much less:

In addition, Sony BMG agreed to reimburse consumers whose computers were damaged while trying to uninstall the XCP software. Customers in both states can file a claim with Sony BMG to receive between $25 to $175 in refunds.
This is on top of the class action suit Sony settled a while back, but likely this is the last of what will happen, at least in the courts.
