Intel intros $1500 quad-core Core 2 Extreme CPU
Intel has a new CPU on the way, this one aimed exclusively at the as of yet unreleased Skulltrail platform. That means the CPU will also be aimed only at the enthusiast market, and will be carrying an enthusiast price.
The new Core 2 Extreme QX9775 will have a high clock frequency of 3.2GHz, utilizing a 1600MHz FSB. The CPU won't be a lightweight on your pocketbook at $1500. That price, while obscene, is probably largely due to the CPU being essentially the quad-core Xeon family, and will be able to support multiple physical CPUs.
Typically the super high end desktop CPUs do not sell much, so clearly Intel is trying to keep attention away from the impending release of Phenom.

This chip is bound to draw significant current, and that does not bode well for multi-processor systems.Further, the lack of any on-board memory controller will - irrespective of the 400(1600) FSB - affect latency.I would not purchase this product especially in volume, and I think it's going to have a very tough time justifying its high price point against cheaper, lower latency AMD Phenom processors. The Phenom is a true quad-core product whereas this device consists of two dual-core processors linked via their FSB, in one package.I'd only consider this product for a water-cooled media workstation, and I would not expect to come away with much change in my pocket considering the fact that a good PSU and decent memory as well as decent cooling are prerequisites to stable use.Yes, it's very fast..but so are overclocked Core 2 Quads..and they're much cheaper, too.[Edited by wild9 on 2007-10-18 20:33:41] |
