Samsung to show first 1.3-inch hard drive at CES

In yet another sign on how serious Samsung takes its aggressive move into the storage market, the company will reportedly unveil (or at least discuss) the first 1.3-inch hard drive targeted at "mobile consumer devices" during next year’s CES in Las Vegas.

To put that into perspective, current iPod Classic drives are 1.8-inches. Samsung is also among the world leaders in NAND flash memory, which is becoming increasingly popular in smaller devices like the iPod nano. But a 1.3-inch hard drive could be a major move towards thinner, lighter laptops and portable players without having to incur the higher cost of SSD drives.

The company will also be announcing a 1TB, 3.5-inch RAID Edition drive, and new 320GB mobile hard drives for notebooks.
