IE broken by security update

The last Patch Tuesday may have inadvertently brought a bit of trouble to the usually calm seas of Microsoft computing (ok, not really) in the form of a botched update for Internet Explorer. While the fixes as a whole last week were good, one security update has supposedly been fingered as the cause of IE ceasing to function in some cases.

The issue would result in IE closing with a generic error, and affects both IE6 and IE7, and the reported cases cited were using an up to date Windows XP SP2. Obviously the bug is not wide-spread, or we'd be hearing a lot more about it. That said, Microsoft is still looking into the issue – so if you are one of those affected, a fix might be due soon. In the interim, uninstalling the update will cure one woe – but might open you up for yet another.
